I am 22 years old, and I remember the day I fell in love with music very clearly. My first cd came to me when I was very very young; Green Day’s ‘Dookie’. I was floored by this real music. I remember combing through the lyric book, singing out my heart to those songs that I finally loved. For my sixth birthday I remember going to the record store and being allowed to pick up 3 albums of my choice; Bush’s ‘16 Stone’, Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, and Green Days earlier album, ‘Kerplunk’. The magic of buying an album was more than alive. I cherished the album art, lyrics, and even the little liner notes. I held a piece of art as if I was holding an original painting by my favorite artist. I would watch MTV every single day and just take in as much music as my brain could handle. Every year after that until now I have been buying my favorite music (whether it be vinyl or cd) and adding it to my collection. I still have my first album, and those 3 cd’s I got for my sixth birthday; I always will. I hope to one day show my kids those cd’s that I grew up with, just as my parents showed me their vinyl collection when I was younger.

The sad thing that I realized as I got older is that the newer generations won’t feel that same nostalgia that I feel everyday. The record store I used to go to isn’t where it used to be. It downsized hard into a tiny little room down the street. Its one of the more disheartening things that I see from time to time; the suffering of a world that used to mean everything to everyone.
